Fat Footer vs. Slim Footers for Marketing

A blog’s footer is a very important part of any blog. There are a lot of great things about what a footer can do you for your blog, not only search engine optimization or design wise – but marketing.

Now it may seem obvious that right off the bat that for marketing reasons, footers that are fat and that hold more content are of course dominant over slimmer ones. But, I feel like I have a pretty good argument for why that may not always be the case.

Great examples of slim footers: Copyblogger, UXBooth

Anyways, I will give you the benefits of both and you can let me know in the comments your thoughts:

Pros of Fat Footers for Marketing

  • You can promote a lot of content in a fat footer
  • There is more space to create an effective marketing pitch for something specific
  • You have the option to add more effective marketing strategies, like banners or videos to promote a site or past post

Pros of Slim Footers for Marketing

  • You have less area, so you can promote less content, but the content you are promoting in a slimmer footer will get more attention than it would in a fat footer as there is less competition for the consumers eye.

When you look at it in retrospect, even though I could only come up with one pro for slim footers, it’s quite a significant one isn’t it? A footer on your blog has a lot of great values, and whatever way you design it, can have a great marketing value behind it.

I think another benefit of fat footers, at least when you load them with content, is that you can keep information normally found in a sidebar from distracting from your content. Could be good or bad.

From my experience, before I had an affiliate banner taking the entire footer and that generated quite a bit of bookings (as that affiliate was on flight tickets). I’ve since replaced that banner with my bio, and a selection of blog posts. Have moved the banner into the body of post (though now a small size than before) and bookings have since dried up. In my opinion, the changes that I’ve carried out, have been detrimental to my revenue and I’m considering reverting back to the old setup.

I like the idea of a fat footer as long as it holds valuable information. But, whose to say what is valuable? I believe you can use it effectively for google and visitors, like having a short About You there or popular posts or links to other websites. I don’t mind them and I don’t really think visitors mind them either.
